“Man does not live from bread alone,” goes the expression. And Germany’s cultural and entertainment scene makes sure to put more on offer than you could ever consume. Cultural needs are more than taken care of through the many theaters, orchestras and museums. In fact, making a choice of what to do or see from among the many options is by far the hardest part.
Keeping an Overview
Your daily paper will tell you what’s going on. The tourist information office offers weekly and monthly guides to cultural events in the areas. Even the individual theaters, opera houses and concert halls offer their own program schedules, with detailed descriptions of what’s coming up. For those who like a comprehensive list of events, be it cinema, music or theater, city magazines offer a wealth of information. And the Internet of course is standing ready with tips and recommendations. One idea for real theater and concert connoisseurs is season tickets. Many ticket sellers offer these at the beginning of every new season. The money you save can then be spent in other kinds of “cultural centers”—bars and pubs, that is.
Bar Culture
There’s no limit to the number of bars that you can visit, if you so choose. “Bar Culture” is a cherished German tradition. It’s in the bar where you meet up with friends after, or even instead of a visit to the cinema or the theater. Friends and acquaintances can let you know about the best bars in your areas. And don’t forget about the tip. As a rule, if you’re pleased with the service, round up your bill to the next euro. For bills over five euro, a 10 per cent tip is the rule.
