Under the motto “Eyes in Everything,” the Bochum University space flight exhibit opens in the school library on August 31. The exhibit covers a lot of ground – everything from Galileo to the projects being worked on today by the European Space Agency (ESA). The largest space telescope ever activated was launched into space this May on an Ariane-5 rocket made by ESA. That telescope, named “Herschel,” gathers infrared light with its 3.5 meter measuring mirror. With this mirror and the light it gathers, astronomers can investigate young solar systems. A space probe named “Planck,” which was launched in conjunction with Herschel, will help scientists get a glimpse at what our universe would’ve looked like at its birth. Planck is especially good at detecting for mysterious fields of radiation that universes emit. Models of both Herschel and Planck will be on display at the exhibit. The exhibit is part of International Astronomy Year, which is being celebrated at many German universities.
