Herta Müller

Herta Mueller won the Nobel Prize for Literature 2009 (10/12/2009)

Romanian-born German author Herta Mueller won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Mueller, who beat out favorites Philip Roth and Amos Oz, to win the prize, said she was overwhelmed by the honor.
At a press conference in Berlin, Mueller said her work was deeply intertwined with her personal experience of living under a totalitarian regime.
Ms. Müller was born and raised in the German-speaking town of Nitzkydorf, Romania. Her father served in the Waffen-SS in World War II, and her mother was deported to a work camp in the Soviet Union in 1945.
