Learning German

What a Language

No doubt about it, German is a difficult language. But learning it is possible and best done, of course, in Germany. Still, a language course before you leave home does have its advantages, since everything goes much more smoothly when people understand one another, be it in your day-to-day activities, personal life or at work. Of course the preferred language of research these days is English, but still, most every researcher who spent time in Germany has emphasized how important at least some knowledge of German is. Many countries and cities—from Abidhan to Zagreb—have branches of the “Goethe-Institute,” German-run cultural institutes which offer language courses. You can also take courses when you get here at universities or language schools. Many fellowship organizations also offer courses. The most important thing to remember is—have courage! Whoever speaks will be spoken to. And every stab at communication—whether with the baker around the corner or the colleague in the office—will help you along with your German.
