Organisations at a Glance

Germany is more than a country of poets and philosophers; it is also a country of researchers and inventors. German scientists enjoy an excellent reputation worldwide. Research in Germany is very open. Guest researchers from all over the world work and teach here.

It is unthinkable nowadays to conduct high-level research at universities without intense collaboration with research institutions both at home and abroad. That is one reason why there are many organizations conduction research outside the university.

Numerous research institutes, major research bodies and funding organizations make up an important part of Germany's science infrastructure. Doing basic and applied research at an international scale, these institutions work in close cooperation with universities and industry.

Basically, there are four publicly funded scientific organizations that share the most important fields of research with the universities. These are the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science, the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of National Research Centres, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Association of German Research Institutes.

The work done by these organizations in training young scientists takes some of the load off the universities in their task to prepare a highly qualified young workforce for science and industry.
