Studying in Braunschweig

A Tradition of Technical Education

The Technical University Carolo Wilhelmina (TU) is more than 250 years old. Approximately 14,000 students are enrolled in some 40 degree programs here, and 1,350 of the students are from abroad.
All engineering science and several natural science degree programs begin in the winter semester only.

The Technical University and its Most Famous Student

For a long time Germans carried him in their pockets – the most famous student to attend the University of Braunschweig, Carl Friedrich Gauß. This 19th century mathematician used to grace DM 10 bills. But now his familiar face has disappeared from wallets ever since the euro was introduced. Today, mathematics is one of approximately 40 degree programs at the Technical University (TU). The liberal arts meanwhile play a more important role than they did 50 years ago, but the focus of teaching still remains engineering science and natural science degree programs.

Computational Sciences in Engineering

The Technical University (TU) offers a Master’s degree program in Computational Sciences in Engineering (CSE) which is especially attractive for civil engineers, mechanical engineers, computer scientists and mathematicians. In order to keep up with the trends in the computer branch, the university has devised a degree program that unites scientific computation and information processing with international and interdisciplinary studies. University students also have the opportunity to combine their regular subject with the CSE Master’s degree program and thus attain a Master’s and a Diplom degree.
The degree program has been organized in two languages, and nearly all of the lectures are held in English. The institute maintains research contacts all over the world.

A Research Airport

The so-called research airport is the only one of its kind in Germany. The headquarters for the Institut der Deutschen Luft- und Raumfahrt (a German aerospace institute) and the Luftfahrtbundesamt (federal authority responsible for supervision of the aviation industry) are located at the airport in northern Braunschweig. Four institutes from the Technical University (TU) have been relocated to the airport grounds in order to intensify contact with these institutes and improve networking. The aeronautical and aerospace engineering field of specialization is part of the mechanical engineering department.

School of Art and University of Applied Sciences

The University of Applied Sciences at Braunschweig/Wolfenbüttel (FH) is somewhat smaller than the TU. It is spread out over four locations: Braunschweig, Wolfenbüttel, Wolfsburg and Salzgitter-Calbecht. Approximately 400 of the 6,000 students come from abroad. The degree programs, of which there are more than 50, begin in both the winter and summer semesters. The FH offers many degree programs with integrated professional training.

The Braunschweig School of Art (HBK) focuses not on technology, but on the arts. The atmosphere on campus is friendly, and approximately 1,100 students are enrolled in subjects such as free art, communication design, industrial design and media sciences. Interdisciplinary learning is important at the Braunschweig School of Art (HBK). Anyone enrolled in one of the school’s seven departments can also attend seminars at the other institutes. The courses of study within the seven departments can be started in either the winter or summer semester.
