Living in Landshut

Kitchen parties, cabaret and cult movies

Bernadette is into speaking Bavarian. When the young French came to Landshut, she was eager to get to know Bavaria, whether language, culture or mentality. She bought a Bavarian-German dictionary and seized every opportunity to speak in the local dialect. Today, Landshut has become her second home. People here are open-minded and sociable, and she goes into raptures about the beauty of the town.
But there is another reason, she feels so much at ease: life in the dorms is just great. "There is so much going on“ she says, not only on Thursday nights, when the dorm bar is open. The big dorm kitchens are the places to go. As a number of students share one kitchen, there is always a lot of hurly-burly and the kitchens easily turn into a party zone, where people don’t just cook, but dance, laugh and eat. Quite often friends from the other floors join in or she is invited to party at one of the other kitchens.

Beer gardens and the “Schwarzer Hahn”

If you want to go to spend a night out in town, it is best to go by car, as the dorm is close to the University of Applied Sciences, but outside town in the Schönbrunn district.
Bernadette likes Landshut bars. Her favorites are the "Irish Pub“ and the "Schwarzer Hahn“, an authentic Bavarian bar for the ‘in-crowd’. However, as soon as spring is in the air, you will find the French student, along with everybody else, in one of the many beer gardens. For the locals, it would not be a real summer, if they did not have their beer and traditional large pretzels outside.

A festival, cult movies and the "Kleines Theater"

Bernadette is passionately fond of the stage. Lately, she has joined the theater group of the University of Applied Sciences, where she can playfully improve her German and has a lot of fun with her fellow students.
She is full of energy, and likes to be part of the show, but she enjoys being part of the audience just as much. She loves the” Kleines Theater”, which is less popular than the major “Stadttheater”, but has much more interesting things to offer. The small ensemble stages contemporary pieces and is always willing to experiment. This is what theater should be like, says Bernadette.
In the meantime, she has come to understand what the ‘German soul’ is all about, and she therefore is a fan of the “Kulturforum”, where cabaret artists from all over the country perform, often making fun of those German idiosyncrasies.
When it comes to movie theaters, Bernadette’s favorite is the "Kinoptikum“, which does not only show the usual box office hits, but also old cult movies, German films and Hollywood classics as well.
And then there are the “Hofmusiktage”, a biennial music festival with classical music, modern sounds, world music, theater and dance performances - there is so much selection, that it is hard for Bernadette to make a choice.

A pond for swimming and snowball fights

When Bernadette feels like the open countryside, she goes for a stroll along one of the two banks of the Isar river or she borrows a bike at the Foreign Students’ Office, and sets out to discover her surroundings. If it is warm outside, you will find her in the “Gretlmühle” holiday area nearby the dorms, swimming in the pond.
Wintertime holds a special treat for Bernadette - the “Schneegaudi”, which is having fun in the snow, sledding, snowball fighting and hiking in the Bavarian Alps. Like so many other things, the trip is organized by the University Parish, where students arrange interesting cultural events, like going to the opera in Munich, university concerts or cabaret shows. Even a trip to Paris is on the schedule, but Bernadette knows the French capital like the back of her hand. For the time being, she will stay in Bavaria, as there is still so much left to discover.
