International and interdisciplinary: the University of Applied Sciences in Landshut

Studying in Landshut

Informal and open-minded

Always a box of chocolates on her desk, Ms Maier at the Foreign Students’ Office, is ready to give out candy and listen to the woes of every student. The Foreign Students’ Office wants international students to feel at ease, offering not only sweets but personal contact, too. The office assists them on their trips to the various authorities and organizing events.

Judith Maier’s chocolate box is quite a good symbol of the informal atmosphere at the Landshut institution. People do not only go to school together, but share a part of their lives together – be it during the lectures, while playing cards together, when meeting in the campus canteen or at the parties in the main lecture hall.

Open to new ideas

And the University of Applied Sciences’ structure reflects this down-to-earth mentality as well. Its architecture is simple and imaginative at the same time, displaying a love for art and a tendency towards experimental forms: small inner yards, direct light and large windows make a connection between the university and the outside world.
This outside world plays an important role, for the university’s relations with local companies are close. Many businesses have been established in the region, luckily for the students, who are doing a period of practical training in the companies, thereby building ties, that might prove useful in their professional lives.
Relations on an international level are high on the university’s priority list. Beside mechanical and industrial engineering, computer science and social work, you have the option between a number of master degree courses or the dual degree program in International business administration.

A dual degree program: International business administration

In cooperation with the partner university of Cambridge, the Landshut University of Applied Sciences set up the dual degree course in International business administration. At the end of the program you will be able to choose between two different degrees, the German Bachelor of Arts (FH Landshut) or the English Bachelor of Arts (Hons).
During seven semesters students will be prepared for a managerial job in an international company in Germany or in the partner country England. The teaching between both universities is coordinated and students can even do their periods of practical training abroad, if they wish to.

Interdisciplinary learning: industrial engineering

A Landshut peculiarity is the course in industrial engineering, for it is based on electrical rather than mechanical engineering, in contrast to most other institutions of higher education. This is why the program is part of the department of electrical engineering and computer sciences. Interdisciplinary training is the most important thing, as industrial engineers are supposed to be trained in different fields. But the focus is not only on theory, students can translate into practice what they have learned, participating in different projects and doing practical semesters.

Management and business administration combined: the Master course in social work

The Masters program in social work is a joint project of the Landshut University of Applied Sciences and the Akademie Schönbrunn. It was set up in cooperation with the Swiss University of Applied Sciences Solothurn and aims at preparing students of education science and psychology for managerial jobs in charitable organizations, be it environmental groups or day-nurseries. The postgraduate course is not only intended as a training to expand personal and social abilities, but to provide students with a deeper understanding of the business aspects of management.
