It’s that time of the year again when we’re going through the bureaucracy of extending our student visas.

It’s always daunting and confusing the first time but later it becomes pretty simple and straight forward.
I’ve learnt that the documents and policies for extending a student visa varies slightly from state to state but this week I will write about what it’s like in Offenburg. It’s a good idea to start your application a month before your visa expires since it takes the office around a month or two to hand you your new one.

It’s always daunting and confusing the first time but later it becomes pretty simple and straight forward.

In Offenburg, we go to the ‘AusländerBüro’ for a visa extension. As of now, it is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and Thursday afternoons. It used to be incredibly crowded and you had to wait for two or three hours in line before it was your turn. So it was always a nightmare going there. But recently they increased their working hours and it has become much less crowded and a bit more efficient.

For extending your visa, you need the following documents:

  • Enrollment certificate Immatrikulationsbescheinigung der Hochschule
  • Insurance certificate Krankenversicherungsnachweis
  • Accomodation contract Mietvertrag
  • Bank statement Finanzierungsnachweis
  • Passport
  • A passport photo
  • The visa extension form

Sometimes, you are also required to submit your transcript especially if you are extending the duration of your study beyond the normal duration needed to complete your studies.

The bank statement shows your transactions for the past three months and should ideally have an amount of €8800 at the time of application, however that amount seems to have gone up to €10236 in some states. In Offenburg, the office accepts a bank statement with as little as €5000. And if you have a working contract which proves you have a certain amount of stable income every month, the amount could be even lower.

In Offenburg, there usually isn’t much of a hassle when applying for an extension – it might be because it’s a very small city and Hochschule Offenburg is the only university there is. The officers don’t have many questions to ask and once they check and accept your documents, you just need to record your fingerprints and sign some papers. The wait could be between one to two months but I have heard that the nationality of the applicant also affects the amount of time one will need to wait before receiving a new visa. For me it has always been around 4 or 5 weeks, but I do have friends who have had to wait for up to 3 months long. Tip: Apply early.

All the information in this blog post come from personal experience or that of friends’. For specific and more up-to-date information, please contact your local visa offices. Good Luck!

Hello, i have a question. I have a language preparation visa and it is valid until 22 September 2023. Unfortunately, i cannot continue my study here and i need to fly back to my home country. My problem is that i have DSH oral examination on 21 or 22 September 2023 (i retake the examination just to improve my result). So can i fly on 23 September? Because im afraid that my examination is on 22 September. If i cannot fly after the visa expired, what must i do to extend it for one or two days?

Hallo. My visa is about to expire. I would like to ask if it is possible to extend my visa using the Aunahmepruefung invitation? The Aufnahmepruefung will be held in January 2024? Do I have to extend at the ABH of the city where the Aufnahmepruefung is held?

If you apply for a Studienkolleg and the permit will expire at the end of the Studienkolleg and want to go to university that is different from the Studienkolleg i.e in a different city, do you have to apply for a new visa or just an extension?

written by Fy created on

Hi, and thank you for your inquiry. The best thing to do first is to inquire at the International Office of your future higher education institution. You should not only inquire about the residence permit, but also whether the degree of your Studienkolleg is recognised and whether there are points to consider. Unfortunately, we cannot make any binding statements, but the International Office will help you further. You can find the contact details of the responsible International Office on the website of your chosen university. Have a good time and best wishes Your Study in Germany Team 👋🇩🇪

Hello! Is there any way to know what the financial requirements for each city when extending the residence permit are? For instance if I am studying in TH Aschaffenburg UAS, is there any relevant authority I can contact to know what is the best amount to have blocked/have in order to renew my permit for another year?

written by Morris created on

Hi Morris, thanks for getting in touch. If you are not yet in Germany, you would have to contact a German mission abroad (embassy or consulate). On the website of the German Federal Foreign Office you can find the addresses of German diplomatic missions abroad: http://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/EN/AAmt/Auslandsvertretungen/Uebersicht_node.html. If you are already in Germany, you would have to get information from the foreigners authority responsible for you, i.e. in your future place of residence. Alternatively, you could also ask the International Office of your higher education institution in advance. You might get an appointment faster. If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to get in touch with us again - this is also possible via our contact form: https://www.study-in-germany.de/en/get-in-touch/contact/. However, I registered as a 1-year student. From the date I arrived until today, I emailed and called the foreign office of Saarbrücken many times for visa appointments, but they did not answer. Also, 2 months ago, a man from a foreign office told me that I have time, that I should not be in a hurry, and that I will receive an appointment letter within 10 days. Of course, no letter came. I don't know who I have to go to, I'm worried about it. I will have a second semester but this time my visa will not be updated. What should I do in this situation, can you please help? Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Kind regards

At the moment it is actually very difficult to get appointments at the embassies due to the global pandemic. Long waiting times can often be expected; some embassies are even completely closed. Hi Daniel, the best thing to do is to contact the international office at your university as soon as possible. There you can explain why your permit was not received in time, possibly you can submit it later. You can also ask the student council of your degree program or the AStA of your university for advice and help, they will at least be able to point you in the right direction. Unfortunately, we cannot give any further information, as every university handles these procedures differently. Good luck and best wishes, Your Study in Germany Team

I was advised by HR to get in touch with Finanzamt / Ausländerbehörde and extend working days. As I am new and unaware of this process can you please help me with this? I look forward to hearing from you soon. Thank you in advance.

Hi Ashwin, you can find extensive information about working in Germany on the website: http://www.make-it-in-germany.com/en/. Non-EU students are allowed to work a maximum of 120 days or 240-half days per year. More details can be found on the following website: https://www.study-in-germany.de/en/plan-your-stay/working-while-studying/part-time-job_71027.php. You could also, for example, contact one of the local student service organisations (Studentenwerke) for information about student jobs. Please search for local student service organisations via the homepage of the German National Association for Student Affairs (Deutsches Studentenwerk) at: http://www.studentenwerke.de/en/ Good luck and best wishes, Your Study in Germany Team

Hi Rumeng, Till what period did you get your visa extended? Is it for 6 more months or the entire 18 months period which students get in Germany to find a job? Appreciate your reply

Hi Everyone, I need urgent help!! My visa will expire on 13th october 2020. I am planning to travel on 21st sep 2020. Am I eligible to travel on expected date or need to travel at least one month before my long term visa gets expired? Best Regards, Gurpreet

written by Gurpreet Singh created on

Hi Gurpreet, You will find general information on visas and residence permits on our website. For more information about visa requirements, contact the German embassy or German consulate in your home country. On the website of the German Federal Foreign Office you can find the addresses of German diplomatic missions abroad: http://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/EN/AAmt/Auslandsvertretungen/Uebersicht_node.html. On this website you can also view the most recent visa requirements for all countries. You may enter Germany for study purposes, if the studies cannot be carried out entirely from abroad. Therefore, it is important that the visa application centres and border officials can see from official documents of the German (host) institution that the study or doctorate requires a presence in Germany. Otherwise, visas may not be issued or entry may be refused. Please contact your (host) university in this regard. Best wishes, Your Study in Germany Team

Right now it seems like Wordpress is the top blogging platform available right now. (from what I've read) Is that what you are using on your blog?

Thank you! This is very detailed and understandable! I want to ask a question about the passport and documents related to it. I have read here about rule 3+3 of the validity period of a passport for entering Germany (https://blog.vitalchek.com/vital-records/passport-validity-rule-know-before-you-go/) This means that my passport must still be valid for three months after the expiry of my visa if I understand correctly. Can this be the reason for the refusal of a visa if my passport expires in 2021 and I am going to go in September this year?

Hi Jamie, unfortunately, we cannot help you in this matter. For more information about visa requirements, contact the German embassy or German consulate in your home country, because the regulations vary from one country to another. On the website of the German Federal Foreign Office you can find the addresses of German diplomatic missions abroad: http://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/EN/AAmt/Auslandsvertretungen/Uebersicht_node.html Best wishes, Your Study in Germany Team

Dependent on the embassy, you may also need to show proof that you don’t have a criminal record. One of the ways in which you can prove you have sufficient funds to study in Germany is by depositing a security payment into a blocked account – this means you cannot withdraw the money until after you arrive in Germany.  If you are planning to study in Germany for more than 90 days you should apply for a National Visa for the purpose of study rather than a Schengen Visa, which will only allow you to stay in Germany for three months.

It's very frustrating to get a student visa appointment with the German consulate in Nigeria, I have booked since on the 30th of January and haven't been responded to, in fact, I don't even know my fate. If I have not paid a part of my tuition fee, I would have forgotten the whole issue of going to Germany to study, I believe the delay is intentional and there is a kind of gate-keeping, they only do this to students from third world countries or none white student applicants.

Its not all African countries with that problem. It depends on experiences with citizens of that country. In my African country visitor visa takes two days and student visa is quick too. No need for appointment too as applications are few, there's less fraud and forgery and citizens general stick to visa conditions and rarely find themselves in trouble in foreign countries, so Embassies have less trouble making quick decisions.

Germany is now getting more interest from international students who want to study in the country through study exchange visa program. Since the country not only offers top class education most universities in the country offers scholarship programs that helps students fund their tuition fee. So it's really ideal for the international students to continue studying in Germany.

That is entirely not true, there gatekeeping and intentional delay in getting an appointment for a student visa in none White countries especially Africa, I have booked for an appointment going to a month now with no response, if I had not made part payment for my tuition I wouldn't bother so much.
