Something that may be a worry to you before you arrive is whether or not you will make friends in Germany. It can also greatly impact on your stay and your impression of Germany.

Luckily most people will feel the same as you when starting out at Uni or moving to a new city. This makes people more outgoing and willing to meet new people. Uni is a great place to meet people from different backgrounds that you may not have had a chance to talk with before. Of course, one benefit of studying a course at university is that the people in your course also chose that course to study, so you instantly have something in common. You will end up spending the majority of your time among the same people so don’t worry if you don’t make friends immediately as there is plenty of time to do so.

Another great way to meet people is from where you end up living. Usually, as a student, this will be either a dormitory (Studentwohnheim) or an apartment share (Wohngemeinschaften or WG). Naturally in a dormitory you are going to be surrounded by people but if you feel overcrowded by this, don’t worry. Usually you share a kitchen with only a few people and this really helps to get to know people. As you get to know these people better you can start cooking together. This is a great way to either sample some authentic German food or if your roommates are international students, taste some foreign cuisine. A WG might be a quicker way to get to know people as there is only a few of you sharing an apartment together.

Another great way to meet people is to join a club or play a sport.  Universities are full of clubs and sports teams to join. It’s a great way to meet people and can, in some cases, offer a chance to travel around. You could even found your own club for an interest/sport that you like.

All of these options are of course just tips. There is no definitive way to make friends. However, if you are open minded and make an effort, however big or small, you will make friends and get to know people as time goes by.
