A Stunning Secret Spot in Ilmenau

One of my favorite things to do in Ilmenau is to wear my headphones and walk around the campus. As I wandered through Ilmenau's cobblestone streets and leafy avenues, I thought I had seen all the town had to offer. Little did I know, a hidden treasure lay just around the corner, waiting to be discovered.

In the lively university town of Ilmenau, Germany, there’s a hidden gem called Ehrenbergkreuz. My friend invited me to explore this secret spot on one crisp autumn evening, promising a breathtaking experience just minutes from away campus.

With my friend as my guide, we embarked on a journey through our campus, following a steep trail that led us higher and higher.

Towering pine trees whispered secrets as we ascended, and our anticipation grew with each step. I thought we had reached Aussichtpunkt Ehrenberg, the place we came here for, which is a popular student attraction point in Ilmenau.

Students come here to watch sunsets, stargaze at night, socialize with friends, and hang out, it is one of the student spaces in our town. But to my surprise, we moved forward into the woods and crossed the Ehrenberg viewpoint.

Eventually, we emerged at a small clearing that revealed another incredible viewpoint, named Ehrenbergkreuz. As I stood there, taking in the sweeping vistas, I felt a sense of peace and restfulness wash over me.

What makes Ehrenbergkreuz so special is not just the view, but the serene, almost meditative atmosphere. There are a few wooden benches where you can sit and simply take it all in, away from the crowds. In the distance, a white bridge can be seen, creating a picturesque scene. The only sounds are the gentle rustling of the trees and the occasional bird call. It’s the perfect spot to clear your mind, read a book, or simply enjoy some quiet reflection.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant hues of orange and pink, I was struck by the sheer beauty of this hidden gem. It’s the kind of place that feels like a well-kept secret, known only to the locals and a lucky few visitors.

If you find yourself studying in Ilmenau, or even just passing through, I highly recommend making the short trek up to Ehrenbergkreuz. It’s a true gem that perfectly encapsulates the charm and natural wonder of this underrated corner of Germany. Just be sure to bring your camera – the views from up here are simply too stunning not to capture.
