How I learned to draw graffiti and made a film

I study Film, and every semester we embark on a film project that allows us to explore different topics and genres. This time, our team decided to create a short film centered around the theme of Flensburg miniatures, and we were thrilled to focus on the captivating world of graffiti. It was an incredible opportunity not only to make a movie but also to learn the art of graffiti.

In our film, our aim was to delve into both the legal and illegal aspects of graffiti art, while also showcasing the inherent beauty of graffiti and street art. To my surprise, I discovered that creating graffiti entails more than meets the eye.

It became evident that proper safety measures are essential, as the sprays used in graffiti can pose risks to the respiratory system. I learned that wearing special respirators is crucial in order to protect oneself while engaging in this form of artistic expression.

From the sidelines, watching people paint graffiti may appear deceptively simple, but in reality, it encompasses numerous intricacies. The choice of spray head size, for instance, depends on the specific artwork one intends to create. Graffiti, in my opinion, is an art form that promotes freedom and allows for unlimited imagination.

During the workshop, I encountered individuals who already possessed experience in graffiti, while I had none. Naturally, I found myself facing significant challenges. However, the workshop teacher provided valuable guidance and direction, enabling me to develop rudimentary sketches. It was a journey of trial and error, but through persistence, I gradually honed my skills.

Furthermore, exploring the art of graffiti allowed me to see my surroundings in a different light. Previously overlooked alleyways and walls transformed into potential canvases for self-expression. Graffiti has the power to inject life into urban spaces, turning them into vibrant art galleries that engage and captivate passersby.

Ultimately, my journey into the world of graffiti taught me not only technical skills but also valuable life lessons. It taught me the importance of embracing challenges and stepping out of my comfort zone. Moreover, it highlighted the significance of community and collaboration in fostering creativity and pushing artistic boundaries.

As a filmmaker, this experience has deepened my understanding and appreciation for various art forms, expanding my artistic repertoire. I am excited to incorporate these newfound insights into my future film projects, bringing the spirit and essence of graffiti into the realm of cinema.
